Attaching external data to a product?

A bit technical question but bear with me....

We are creating a custom application (SPA, Javascript, separate database) to allow the customer to configure a product, through a unique interface.
Once finished, we want to direct to a standard VM product page, where the base product is, and we want all the extra configuration included with this product in the checkout.

We should be able to see the base product in the orders, alongside the extra configuration data (e.g. attached as text) so we can configure and ship the product as per the customer's desire.

Any opinion on how we can integrate our application with the VM product?
