downloadable products?

I've been going over through this forum, and found not much about downloadable products. I read it wasn't included to keep the cart smaller. But that is some years in the past. Back when Win 98SE ruled the world... 

In Shop > Media Files I can upload zip files for sale: Shop Media Files > New > Role: For Sale. That's as far as I got. I can upload a file, but no more than that.
how do I sell downloadable products? Using a plugin?
