if you choose a product on the home page it works.

Yes I can see that http://www.twr-trading.nl/vm/ works and debug is on, with no errors shown.

Yes that would be the problem.

But I don´t understand:

www.twr-trading.nl is the normal site without the vm update

How can these be different sites ? They seem to have the same URL ?

Is there a mixup in the SEF ?

the /vm links are all 404's now

but back to the problem.. again never seen but to try and fix the fatal add

I think You have the URLs mixed up. I think some content in the new site still refers to the root site. You should look into Joomla configuration Virtuemart and make sure that for example Cookiedomain and other URL's  don' t refer to the root site.

Otherwise is only my advise to try protostar without SEO to see what is going on. Because You get redirected from the VM URL to the non VM URL, when You select categories.

Maybe there is a rewrite in .htaccess ?

@GJC i do not know why this is happing but I saw one other how had this problem aslo.

Glad You can use the fix, but it looks strange to me. Like VM can not load the helper because some URL is wrong for Your subdirectory VM install. This works without the fix for almost all others.
