When trying to add new product, server error 500 on front end/ lose styling

I have tried this with 3 different quickstarts, all with the same issue.  I try to add a new product to a store but the styling breaks and flushes all the way to the left.  Virtuemart 3.012/Joomla 3.47

Why play with "quickstarts"? They cause so many problems. The only one I would recommend is VirtueMart3.0.12_Joomla_2.5.29-Stable-Full_Package_with_security_patch.zip from http://dev.virtuemart.net/projects/virtuemart/files

Does sound a bit like a server problem if those packages were from different sources.
