I was able to make my footer background color the full width of the screen  by simply adding a max-width:100%; to the css file. I tried doing the same thing to the header area but that seems much more complicated. Everything Ive tried does not work. IM using the vmbeez5 template, VM3 joomla 2.5.28

Do you have a url?
Joomla!         3.6.5
VirtueMart     3.0.18

VMBeez5 template is only slightly changed from the default Joomla Beez5. The main difference being the use of /css/vmbeez5.css instead of the original /css/beez5.css

So the place to look is in the Joomla forum, eg http://forum.joomla.org/viewtopic.php?p=2484311  or http://forum.joomla.org/viewtopic.php?f=619&t=823855#p3098082
