products from old session are re-added to cart at next login (days later)

Hello,
I am not sure if the following is a feature or an error on our sites.
In vm 306 and above, the cart is saved when the customer logs out, ie, when the customer logs in a following session (next week or so), the items from last session is re-added to the cart. Session is set to 30 minutes, however, it works for days on this site.
It is a problem for us as many of our customers log in after they have picked products. When they then log in, all the old products are added to the cart, which is observed as an error for them.

Anyone experiencing the same issue? Is there a way of keeping it to only the given session time? any feedback is appreciated.

It is the feature to store carts, as big shops like Amazon, ebay do it.

When a customer adds a product, which is already stored, it should not be added again.
