Shopper assets for servicing, with automatic periodic reminder emails?

I'm sure nothing like this exists, but someone might have a clever idea. I have a client who wants a website selling servicing of dive equipment. Could I have each of his customers as a shopper, and allocate a number of assets (not products) to each customer. When each asset is approaching it's service due date, an email is fired off to remind the shopper the service is due.

e.g. Fred Jones runs a small dive school, and has ten air tanks. A shopper is created with his name, and each tank is entered, with an asset name, serial number, and date of last service. The system fires off an email when each tank hits 11 months elapsed time after it's last service. If some equipment is serviced at different times, or some has different service intervals, this is handled.

I can see this being potentially a bespoke bit of coding, but does anyone know of an extension I might adapt?
