Backorder / product availability function VM2

On VM1 you could set the availability of a product to a future date. It would show an "out of stock" picture and availability date on the product page. Then when that date came, the message would disappear.

I really would like that functionality again. Is this possible? I do not use Virtuemart to keep track of stock levels.
