Witch programming is the best?

Hi there everyone,

Can you guys tell me witch programming is the best to know to modify and edit VM and joomla?because i need to know how to make better editing then only css,i know that css is great for edting styles and so but will like to know the more deeper parts of VM and joomla,to make the stuff i would like on my site.

I know that VM uses allot of php so will that be the best thing to learn?
