Some functions do not work properly when using Joomla 1.5 with VirtueMart 2 instead of Joomla 2.5 - It was announced that Joomla 1.5 is no longer supported for VirtueMart -   http://virtuemart.net/news/list-all-news/426-end-of-life-for-virtuemart-11-heidelpay-now-in-virtuemart-2012

But what you have is an extreme! I suspect something went wrong during the installation so you may have to revert to a backup. But first check the server error log in case you actually have a 500 error - the log will show the problem if you have.

you have even more luck with the latest version http://forum.virtuemart.net/index.php?topic=115877.0 we added for 1-2 important functions a fallback.
