Maximenu is showing deleted virtumart categories as a bulleted list

I installed Maximenu to my (Joomla 2.5.6) website ecommerce (Virtumart 2) pages and created a number of categories, the menu was very successful and presented the categories just as I intended.

Then I decided to delete all the categories and start again. This appears to have caused rampant confusion between Maximenu and Virtumart. The menu no longer appears as a lovely sliding menu, all the items (though previously deleted) and any new categories that I add appear as an ugly bulleted list. What have I done wrong?  HELP
