Display additional images in two columns

Hello, Though barely qualified to do so, I have rearranged some php to create a look that works on my product page. Now I would like my thumbnails to be displayed in two columns below the main image. I have been unable to do this with any configuration in the backend. Can someone give me a pointer on the coding to do this? I would appreciate it!
