Can't see any products - new store

Hello, I am new to joomla and virtuemart, but i was easily able to install them both. However, i cant seem to understand how virtuemart works, since i have created a website with joomla, then succesfully installed virtuemart component, then, configured the store in the admin panel, but when i try to preview the store using my domain name, all i see is the Joomla! default website that came with the installation and no products at all (or anything that resembles an online store). I wonder if i'm ignoring some obvious piece of information and therefore i am lost?. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

you need to create a "new menu item" in joomla, for "menu item type" chose something from the virtuemart section (e.g. virtuemart categories). fill out the rest.
