Hi,

make a menu item for all categories via category layout.
In the second tab of the menu item you find the settings you are looking for.

Please use only stable versions with even numbers for your live shop! Use Alpha versions only if you know what risk you are taking.

Thank you!
I guess that's the only way, if using built in config options, avoiding hard-coding.

Tried this solution, but it seems to only display available subcategories of currently opened category, while I'm looking for a way to constantly display all top level categories, on every page  :-\

Use the vm category module.

That's a great idea, thank you! Don't know why didn't think about it :D

I thought you only want to show them on the start page. So the subcategories of category 0, the top level, would have been all main shop categories.

In your case you can use the categories module like Jörgen said.

The second option is to make a menu for the main categories. I always make a menu or hidden menu for the main categories to be able to control them better through the menu item settings in second tab. So it is easier to use different layouts per category.
This menu can be published in the same area like the category module.

That's another good way to do it, thank you.
