VM 2.6 - cart is correct but when paid the order amount changed!

The cart is correct but when paid the order amount changed! The same product is ordered with different custom field variables and the first item takes the option value of the second!?

Please help me fix this ASAP. We now have many orders coming in with the wrong payments received.

Similar to this old issue: VM2.0.2 bug in cart adding same product with various customfields https://forum.virtuemart.net/index.php?topic=99189.0 which marked solved without posting a solution.

P.S. Unable to upgrade to VM 3 yet as some of my required plugins / components don't work yet and finding someone to do the work is difficult.
