how to change category icon sizes?

It looks like the category icons and the product thumbnail sizes are both controlled by the same setting in the Admin CP, but if I want to specifically change the size of the category/sub category icons (on the category page, VM homepage and product details page), where can I do that?

I found this line of code in vmsite-ltr: .category-view .row .category .spacer h2 a img{margin-top:6px;max-width:100%;height:auto;}, but changing the max-width has no effect... on Firefox it does change the rendering (at least when testing using firebug), but a live update doesn't make any changes when viewed in Chrome...
