Image in Cart of Child Product

There are earlier threads on this topic, but I did not really find any answers.

How does one display the image of a child product in the order line of the shopping cart?

In my case, if a customer adds a white shirt (child product) to the cart and the parent product image is a black shirt, the product line image in the cart for the chosen shirt is the one of the parent product (black) and the text is the one of the child product is white. This will confuse the customer and make him perhaps not place the order because he does not know what he is actually ordering.

Is there a solution within standard VM2?
Is there an extension for this?
