VM 2.0.12f Product types, product grouping same as of categories

Hello,
I am using VM 2.0.12f.Please help me to achieve the following requirement of client.

We want to have a couple of ways to sort products.   So it might be categories and then types. Then on home page underneath the categories list, could hae another list of 'types'

types will be another type of product grouping same as of categories.. is it possible ?
it will be treated in the same way as categories

You can use modules to display products at the bottom of the page.
