Tangible and Digital Product Subscription with Virtuemart and MAYBE Akeeba?

Folks, I'm hoping for some opinions. What I'm trying to achieve is subscriptions processed through the Virtuemart cart.

SCENARIO:
1. User wants to subscribe to 12 months of magazine delivery.
2. User goes to Virtuemart store and adds the 12 month subscription to their cart.
3. User checks out, pays and finalizes order.
4. Subscription is managed through a subscription component with auto subscription end notices, monthly send list to admin, etc.

I've been looking into Akeeba Subscriptions, but it looks like the only integration is with VM shopper groups. And, it looks like payment is handled through Akeeba - and not the VM cart. This is no good for tangible products, because there are no shipping methods in Akeeba (as far as I can tell).

Thoughts? Ideas? Solutions? Premium is fine - just need to get something working.
