How to also display the invoice when the order has not been paid yet?

In this post shows a nice way to display the invoice to the client:

But it does only work when the order is 'confirmed', not when the status is still pending. Then it just shows empty content, no errors.

How to get this layout to display the invoice also when it has not been paid yet?
