filter categories with a standard sub category vm 2.6

We are using vm 2.6 and joomla 2.5 I need to give the ability to allow the customer to select their school then an age range say 9-12 for like first year etc second year high school etc its more or less a uniform picker i no the schools would be my main product category but how would i go about applying the age range its almost like a filter i need any suggestions or components would be great

Yes you can have relationships. You will find some working examples in the custom filters page http://breakdesigns.net/extensions/custom-filters

You can create the age ranges as custom fields. E.g a custom field named age and the ranges will be the values of that field.
Then in every product you will have to pick a value (age range) for that custom field.

With Custom Filters you can create a filter from that custom field and set how you want it to be displayed (link,checkbox, list etc)
