Using a central product database for several installations of VM

I've been searching this forum for a while now looking for answers to this question, and while I've found a few instances of people asking the same or similar questions, they've all gone unanswered, or some of them point to a link that no longer exists (yes I've searched archives too).

Currently we have 3 websites that sell different items. One is a main domain and the other 2 are subdomains that run off it. Each has their own separate Joomla and VM installation. What we'd like to do is to centralise the VM databases into one (the main domain).  We're currently running Joomla 1.5/VM1.1.9 but about to upgrade all to Joomla 2.5/VM2.

I believe it's possible to merge all 3 databases into one, provided that each item has a unique identifier, however I think to do so would be messy, especially considering we only want to share the VM products across the 3 sites, not everything else.

Would appreciate any help and/or advice.

Thanks a lot.
