How do i hide the cart during checkout?

I've setup my site so that I have product categories down the left, product lists and details in the center and I have a right hand panel for the shopping cart.

2 questions.

1. How do I hide the cart once a user starts the checkout process?
2. How do I hide the cart when it is empty?

Pretty sure this is standard stuff.
