Registering (unique) product preferences

Hi all,

A client of mine is looking into options to sell unique series of products. Each will have, say, 100 products, branded 1 to 100 (kinda like with art that comes in series). Now he wants his (registered) customers to be able to claim a specific number for each series. So if I'm a 13-guy, I could claim first call on the number 13 of all new series.

Adding a custom field that allows to pick a specific number isn't much of a hassle, but it gets tricky when:
- We want not to show numbers that are already claimed
- We want customers to be able to change their number
- We don't want to oblige customers to pick a number
- We need an overview of all claimed numbers (so we won't send out number that are claimed)
- Not all series have the same volume (some might have 100, some 200 items)

Anyone got experience with this kind of complexity?
