This is my first joomla / virtuemart shop...it took a while get the basics, but we're really happy with the results.  Now it's out there I just need to get some traffic to the site!!

15% discount on all products until the end of January.

If anyone has any tips on SEO or making this site better, please post a reply.  Thanks to everyone on the forum that has helped me with this project.

You need to make it a little more clear what someone is supposed to do when they're looking at a product.

Try and take a step back and look at it from an outside perspective. Give yourself five seconds to identify what stands out on this page:
http://www.pamperparlour.net/handmade-soap/20-strawberries-a-cream-handmade-soap-slice.html

Would you know what you're supposed to do?

I know that's more of a conversion thing than an SEO thing - but if you can't convert the traffic, then what good does it do?

As far as SEO goes, though, you should work on your title tags. For instance, the title of the "handmade soap" category is simply "soaps". Jazz it up, make people want to click on it, while at the same time broaden out on the keywords you use. If you're trying to rank for "handmade soap" - have that be the first part of your title.

Try something like this:
"Handmade Soap Bars, Slices & Squares | Free Shipping | PamperParlour.net"

The first part of the title will help with SEO, the second part will help bring attention and clicks (think if you're ranking #2 instead of #1, what can you say that will make people click you first anyway?), and the last part is for branding (maybe they'll remember you if they see your name enough).

So far I've only used the Yagendoo SEO plugin to clean up the URLs...I've only taken it as far as category titles as it's quite labour intensive because you have to set up menu items for each product to get rid of the product ID numbers.  Other than that, it's cheap, simple and pretty quick (providing you haven't got 100s of cat's!)

jsteele - not sure whay you mean abou that product page? ??? It gives me a big picture of what i might want to buy, a description of what it is, what is smells like, some of the benefits, and then allows me to put it in my cart...can you tell me what you think it's missing...happy to take on board all feedback

Re page titles...yep..other than the home page they're rubbish!!  I'm contemplating laying out for yagendoo's meta tags plugin.  It manages all your meta tags, keywords and controls all your page titles.  It's £40 which in the scheme of things isn't loads, but I'm not sure how much this is going to help my rankings.  At the moment I'm busy building backlinks from complimentary sites, along with marketing strats using facebook and twitter...I've just heard on the grapevine that google is starting to notice twitter a bit more these days.

Keep the comments coming though...i'm a quick learner  ;)

I just mean that the buy button isn't the easiest to find. It blends in rather well with it's surroundings. Not to mention the "back to soaps" button is more prominent (and found before the add to cart), so people would be more likely to find it than your add to cart.

It's usually best to have your call-to-action above the fold of the page. When someone has to scroll down, they're more likely to hit the back button.

If you have time, I would suggest reading a couple of great books on conversion rate optimization:
Landing Page Optimization - Tim Ash
Don't Make Me Think - Steve Krug

These two books are a great help to anyone that wants to make better use of the traffic they're currently getting on their site. It's a lot easier to double a conversion rate than it is to double your traffic, so they're well worth the read.
