Poll: How much time required to customize VirtueMart to your needs?

I'm used to working with Drupal/Modx/Magento and looking into possibly using Joomla/Virtuemart on a current project but it looks like quite a bit of customization would be needed.... so I'm torn between the Magento bridge and using Virtuemart. 

How much time did you initially spend customizing Virtuemart to your needs?  Was documentation/examples impossible to find?
