"customers stay on your site and enter all Credit Card details"

I've just inherited a Joomla site with VirtueMart using authorize.net as the CC processor although it is currently not working. Having read the documentation I see that "This payment module uses the authorize.net AIM method, which means that the customers stay on your site and enter all Credit Card details".

I've set up several shopping carts before but the CC details are always entered on the processors site. I guess VM have their reasons for doing it this way but does it mean that we have to install an SSL certificate in order for the CC details to be passed over an encrypted connection? Even if not required I guess it would be desirable in order to give customers some confidence?

Thanks in anticipation,
