Custom textarea input VM4

Trying to add a text input field for a product in VM4 using custom fields. I can create a field but nothing displays on the product until I enter the some text in it first. But it is not editable. What I need is a textrea input field that a customer can leave a short message for text to be added to the product.

How can I add a custom field to my product page to do this?

I thought this should have worked with customer fields but it does not appear to be working in VM4 on JM4.

Use the standard custom field textinput. Or search for a plugin. I think daycounts has one to offer.

Don't see the option for textinput as a customfield option. I do see textarea but this just as a text string and not a field to enter details.
Unfortunately The Daycounts plugin is only VM3 and JM3.
