suggestion: apply discount on order total via taxes/calculation rules.

Could it be possible to add an option to the calculation rules for a minimum and maximum order amount that the rule will applied? That way I could easily create a discount system based on order size, which I really need

In general, it would also be great to be able to set discounts on a per user / group, or based on total amount purchased, though that would probably require more work.

Than I have overlooked that, I must be overworked

The discount over order size is about the total amount of the order. If the tax and calculation rules could have a minimum and maximum total order amount as option than it.

eg:
0< order amount > 100$ - 5% discount
100$ < order amount - 7% discount

This is done as plugin and we are going to sell it tomorrow for 20 bugs. But it is not working for the amount of the whole order yet. But the plugin will be enhanced with free update possibility.

You guys are seriously missing the point here. Wholesales, guys with the real wholesale business they usually want discounts on total amount purchased.
They are not too happy to deal with quantity purchased

So, uhmmm, this extension http://extensions.virtuemart.net/extensions-virtuemart-2/quantity-related-calculation-detail would be much better if you include discounts on Total amount purchased too.
For example if you buy:
from 500-999$ 3% discount,
from 1000-2000$ 5% discount, and so on

and btw, I'm not happy, I bought this extension on someone's recommendation from Virtuemart team, I've been told that this extension has Total amount purchased discount capabilities, just to find out after I shovelled off 35 euros , that this extension does only quantity related discounts. NOT happy    NOT happy

Great if the producs could be shown with the discount, but with a note that it is dependent on the minimum purchase amount, tabel above etc.

As far as I know it works that way, but could take the total without payment. You can test it without the plugin. The plugin just sets a rule active
