Latest version itemid problem

Upgraded to latest version tonight and am down to one weird problem that is a showstopper.

When the link is generated for product lists (from a category menu), ?item=435 is appended to the url.  If I log in and click on an empty category, the problem resolves.  Obviously this isn't a solution.  Changing the url to itemid=0 works as well.

What do I need to change to get it to default to itemid=0?

Please help!
