Images not removing?

I do not understand why VM is not removing images from the images/stories/virtuemart/product folder when they got deleted in the VM product.
After deleting additional images I have to delete them manually from the folder.

Does not make any sense.

it has never been removed by any version of VM...   

what if you had e.g. multiple products with the same image?

when you "delete" the img from your product you are removing a link to it
