inventory tracking

Is there a way to be able to track inventory on items that have custom fields such as (sizes or colors)? Right now under the product status page it only allows for tracking the total for that item. Make sense? If we don't its going to be near impossible for folks to know what size is in stock in which color......

so i just upgraded to vm3 and I'm still struggling with this small issues.

case in point: I have a smith and wesson shield, it comes in two variations a 9mm and .40cal  for inventory quantity sake how do i set it so that the i display one gun with a drop down to select caliber?

I am trying to use child products and generic custom fields.
