how to set up vm for colors and sizes

I am having a problem setting up my products to use sizes and colors.

I am using vm 3 with Joomla 3.3.6

php 5.3

Any help would be appreciated.

there are many many posts on here about this ...

use the sample data to get examples -- BUT - it doesn't seem possible to set up combination (e.g. colour + size)  stocked products at the moment - a plugin for this is being developed
