update / migrate VM 2.6.6 Joomal 2.5.22 to 2.9 and joomla 3.x

Im am working on a 2.5.x to 3.x joomla update I had VM 2.6.6 installed and joomal 2.5.22. i did the joomal update and now i have the error
Class VmModel cannot extend from interface JModel

so my question is the following.
Which process do i use?
1. Upgrade Joomla then upgrade VM files? (dint work so far as i cant get in the adming do to above error)
2. Update VM to 2.9.x THEN Upgrade Joomla to 3.x?
3. UN INSTALL VM then update joomla to 3.x then install VM again?

thanks for any help if anyone has complete a successful update with these parameters!

It would be upgrade VM first followed by Joomla. But not yet, as 2.9.8 is the first "public" release candidate version and not all issues with updating are fixed. Report any issues on http://forum.virtuemart.net/index.php?board=136.0
