Custom field tooltip translation

Hi, usually, to translate fields in cutom fields one has to create a language variable entry like 'com_virtuemart_cutom_title'. Although this procedure works for cutom fields title or description, I cannot get it to work for tooltips.
Any hint would be welcome.
