Gift Wrapping & Gift Card add-on products offered during Checkout process

Hi,

during check-out we we would like to allow the customer to purchase some value add type products/services like Gift Cards and Gift wrapping.  We might offer a selection of colours for gift wrapping and a selection of gift cards to choose from.  Gift wrapping and gift card products would have a cost which could vary depending which one they buy.

This must be quite a common requirement for online shops.   

Is there any way of doing this either in the core Virtuemart or any plug-ins for it ?   
Has anyone had any success in doing this ?     
Is it a feature worthwhile considering for future Virtuemart releases ?

I'm aware we could use related products, but this would mean adding all the gift wrapping and gift cards as related products to every single product and they would need to add it before going to check-out process.   Don't think this is viable for us.   We prefer to use related products to cross-sell related products.

Could also use product/cart variants.  But similar would need to this for every product.   Purchasing would then be on a per product level rather than on an order basis.  And not vary viable for gift cards where they need to see picture of the gift card options.  Not very friendly way of doing it.

Any thoughts or ideas ?
