products not displaying in set order

Hi I am using joomla 2.5.16 with VM 2.0.24c

the products in the category browse view are not respecting the set sort order

they are not listing by id or sku as far as I can tell - they seem to be listing in the reverse order they are listing in the backend - but this list does not seem to be set in any particular order (eg id, sku, etc) - see screenshots

how do I make the products list in the correct order?

also, how can I mkae the products in the backend list in their ordering?

any help would be greatly appreciated

the categories on the front page are doing the same thing -
-not ordering ny order
not ordring by id

-seem the be ordering in the reverse order they are listed in the backend, which does not seem to be in any particular order
