Product weight vs product packaging

Ive found a few posts about product packaging, but they seem not to relate to what I am seeing on my screen?

I am running version  2.0.20b

I have added in product weight, do I need to enter anything in product packaging? Does the packaging have any impact upon the total weight for delivery? Or is it only relevant if multiple items are being shipped with a different weight than a single item?
