how to make custom payment plugin with payment gateway

hi,

im new and lost about this. I am currently making a e-commerce site for a school project and nearly finished using virtuemart 2 and joomla 2.5, and need to create a custom plugin for payments because there are none available for the payment gateway im using. Its called payment express, and i don't think i can change the method because it's the company's method. i have looked through their documentation of how to integrate the whole thing, but cannot get my head around it. I don't really have an idea of how to start, because i'm pretty sure im supposed to play with a whole different set of files or create files, and i'm not really entirely sure as to what their purposes are. And yes, i have downloaded the sample code and tried to interpret it, but the integration guide also gives examples of how the methods work, but is kind of confusing. Can someone give me a set of tips or steps onto what needs to be done? Please help?
