VirtueMart 2 and Euro symbol (€)

Hi all,
I have this problem with VirtueMart (VirtueMart 2.0.11 installed in Joomla 2.5.7):
I can not display the euro symbol € close to the price of the products but other currencies  appear perfectly.
I read in forums that others have found my same problem and I tried to adopt the proposed solutions (e.g., insertion €) without results.
I have checked the encoding in the database MySQL, I have tried to update VM.
What might be the problem and how to solve it? 
It occurs in both local and remote.

VirtueMart and Joomla versions are both old. This issue has not been described with recent VM versions and 2.0.11 was a version for in-forum testing (testing by forum members to root out the bugs), not for use on a live site. Odd numbered versions are testing versions, even numbered versions are stable, for live site use.
