Drop down list of color options - no change in stock or price

VM1 I would be done in 5 minutes.

VM2 - now it is over 3 hours searching the documentation, the forums and trying all variations of the suggested steps.

All I want is an option for the customer to select a color
- No change in price
- No change in stock/inventory

Making a feature like custom fields more generic is good, but it needs documentation (with common examples).

This should be very simple.

Create custom image field - "Colour"
Add that "Colour"s to a product.
Choose images for added "Colour"s.

Also it's very simple to visit VM2 forum more often, if you already had experience with VM1.
