extra information on product, NO CART variant

Hi,
How would I go about to add some (quit a bit) extra information to each product?
We have a pet food store, and would like to offer a product filter on suitable for animal, i.e. dogs, cats, rabbits.
But then we also need te be able to filter on havy breed, light breed. And baby, youngster, adult, senior. etcetera.
We have about 500 products, and I do not fancy going over each product to repeat mostly the same actions, there must be a easier way.
To be clear, we do not use this information in the cart, but only to be able to feed Breakdesigns CustomFilter extensions, which works on custom field values.
