Items are always oversold with Virtuemart

Can it be fixed or is there a fix such that when a person adds an item into his/her cart, the item is temporarily deducted from the inventory and not only after it is checked out? I encounter scenarios frequently where 5 persons check out the same item when there is only 1 stock left. The result? -4, but they have already manage to pay and think it is reserved for them.
