Quality of uploaded images

Hello, i need really good quality pictures of products in my site and ive noticed that when i upload them they loose a lot of quality. I need gif images because of the transperencies and the borders look sawed once they are uploaded. How can i avoid this?

.png file format also supports transparant backgrounds. Maybe try that. But the file size will be much bigger.

Thank for the tip. I was avoiding .png because of the size, but i'll check it out anyway and see if there's any improvement.
