Update problems are almost always related to a lack of PHP resources on a shared server.

The issue with components menu - see http://forum.virtuemart.net/index.php?topic=101120.msg336461#msg336461

For many people having installation issues related to server upload_max_filesize being set too low, installing the tar.gz file packages rather than the .zip packages usually works.

An alternative is to do this:  http://www.phoca.cz/phocagallery/478-how-to-install-large-components-with-help-of-ftp-in-joomla
