free shipping problem

I'm reviving this because I seriously have a problem not being able to choose a category or certain products/sku's to have free shipping or be excluded from shipping.

Has anyone found a plugin or a workaround that can solve this yet?

I have UPS and a USPS shipment method, I want it so that there are some products in the cart that have free shipping and other products that need to be calculated that they can checkout with either UPS or USPS method only and the free shipping products are not calculated into that shipping cost..

I was able to try one plugin that nearly got me there. I was able to set 0 ounce weights and offer free shipping to a range of weight for products. The free shipping option appeared on checkout and worked however when I also add in products with weights where there is a need for a shipping cost, the free shipping option will still appear giving me 3 shipment methods...

Help is appreciated, I'm almost done
