Shipping Modules (Free)

I just upgraded to VM2 after a nightmare battle with my Joomla template's Java code (it won).
I installed the newest version and seemed to work perfectly except when I went to configure shipping.

What happened to the basic 1 php file that connects to USPS and UPS api?
Is the only way to pay over $50 per file to get this working?

I have no problem paying for some custom coding but this was a single file for VM1 and it worked great.
Maybe if it added some extra functionality but I just need the standards of the old free one.
I just think that it's a bit steep and think I could hire someone to code this for around $100.

Unless I am missing something (and please respond if I am), I am going to post this project on a coding site and will upload my free version if I get this working.

There a lot of topics discussing about the differences between VM1 and VM2.
One of them is that some extensions are not provided for free.
But when you wanna do one , and give it for free, you are welcome.

If there are free plugins, or even third party plugins, where is the place that they are located?

The Joomla site and extentsions by third parties listed and easily found
on the The Joomla! Extensions Directory.  I'm finding some free plugins by
searching in the forums. When I go look at the VirtueMart extension, I
don't find them.
