Individually configure categories per row for each category

Some of my categories have only 2 sub-categories and I would like to change the number of categories per row to 2 for those particular (parent) categories whilst leaving the rest at 3. Is there no way of configuring the number of categories per row individually for each category? This only seems to be possible for products...

I have searched the forum posts extensively and there are plenty solutions for VM1.1 but nothing for VM2.

Please help!!! It is imperative that I get this sorted out.
