Spacing between parameters at top of search results

Having just managed to apply a patch for removing categories from the search results page, I'm still left with a very small but annoying problem.

Immediately underneath the Search Results header at the top of the page, it says "Choose product type" with a drop down box.  The spacing between this & the next line which holds the search box itself is too small causing it to get scrunched up, but also the drop down component isn't working.  It says "Select" inside it, but when you do, nothing happens.

Where do I go to change this i.e. widen that spacing, & is there a fix for the (presumed category) selection?

Edit :/components/com_virtuemart/assets/css/vmsite-ltr.css

Search for : .virtuemart_search .inputbox
and remove or set to wnat you want the height:16px;

If i search "from fatigued" the search find it, but if i search "from fantastic" there are no results!

Can you help me?
