Unique product by custom field

Hi there
I hope i am not the only one who come accross this problem.

I have a shop with products. Each products have a custom field of color which means that each product has about 10 differnet colors.

1. How do you make this color unique in terms of id/SKU? i  mean that each color of the product is a product for it slef and need to be tyreated as one
2. how do i keep a hold of the stock of each color? if you say you have 10 in stock of the product how do you know if you still have form each color if the stock is general for that product but not for the colors?

I know that an answer will come from someone saying that i could create a diffferent product for each color but this will give a totaly bad user expirience of looking at 10 differnet products which all are the same but just other color... so this is not the solution.

Anyone?

You can use the "Generic child variant" custom field.

It will create child products for each color

I have looket at it but can't realy see how i can do it.
Could you be so kind and show me an example of how i set this up?
